Faraday Challenge (IET) 2021
Withington hosted the Faraday Engineering Challenge for four local schools, providing a day of Engineering activities for Year 8 pupils.
Background
The Faraday Challenge is a national engineering-based competition for schools, run by the Institute of Engineering and Technoloy (IET). The challenge aims to open students’ eyes to engineering, in fun and competitive activities.
Resources
Withington’s Head of Science planned the activities and ran them on the day of the event.
Impact
For most students, this was their first taste of engineering. The challenge allowed students to stretch their mathematical abilities with problem-solving, and to work in a team to develop their communication skills. The challenge increases interest in STEM subjects (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) and awareness of STEM careers.
Pupil Involvement
18 pupils took part from local maintained schools, including Sale Grammar School and Whalley Range High School.
Ten Year 8 pupils from Withington also took part in the challenge.
Frequency
The challenge took place over a day.
