Pocklington School Community Action Programme

Pupils from Year 12 at Pocklington School support a variety of community projects in the local community, by volunteering one afternoon a week.

They may visit local Infant and Junior Schools to assist in the classroom, supervised by the Class Teacher, where they provide support for activities such as art and craft or physical education/games.

Aims

The aim is to support young pupils in local Infant and Junior Schools and to provide support to other community projects in Pocklington.

Pupils and teachers from the Infant/Junior School benefit from the additional assistance, in the learning environment.  Other programmes in Pocklington also benefit from the volunteer hours given by the pupils, which allow community projects to run and provide a service to the local community.

For the project to succeed, the Year 12 pupils must be committed, enthusiastic and willing to engage in the project and also be comfortable working with younger children and engaging with the public.

 

Background

The project started following liaison with local Infant and Junior Schools and has been running for over 20 years.

Resources

The project requires school drivers and school minibuses/private vehicles to transport pupils to/from their community action programme venue.

Seven teaching and non-teaching staff are involved for two hours per week.

Impact

The project has been running for 20 years with participation from local Infant and Junior Schools and other community projects,  year on year.

Pupil Involvement

43 pupils from Year 12 at Pocklington School participate in the project, with many state primary school children benefiting from their assistance in the classroom.  The Pocklington community also benefits from projects which are able to run due to volunteer assistance.

Frequency

The project is ongoing and occurs once a week. It is set to continue indefinitely.
