Forced Marriage Drama Project

A collaboration between The Manchester Grammar School, Greater Manchester Police, Levenshulme High School for Girls and other agencies to produce a dramatic show that would raise awareness of how to stop the signs of forced marriage and tackle honour-based abuse.

Aims

The aim of the project was to raise awareness within communities about forced marriage and honour-based abuse by creating an original piece of drama using school students, which will be rolled out on a national scale.

Background

The partnership was initiated by a parent of a pupil at The Manchester Grammar School who also works for Greater Manchester Police, and is a collaboration between The Manchester Grammar School, Greater Manchester Police, Contact Theatre, Levenshulme High School for Girls and a professional playwright.

Resources

The exploratory workshops took place at The Manchester Grammar School and Levenshulme High School for Girls. The premiere of the piece took place in the MGS Theatre and at LHSG in June 2016. Drama staff facilitated the project.

Pupil Involvement

20 pupils from Year 9 were involved, and were the first to the perform the piece - a world premiere - before the script and resources were launched nationally in schools across the country by Greater Manchester Police.
