Rugby Coaching Session and Tournament

RGS Worcester hosted an Under 14 Rugby coaching session and tournament for 96 Year 8 and 9 pupils from Tudor Grange Academy, Nunnery Wood High School, Christopher Whitehead Language College, Blessed Edward Oldcorne Catholic College, The Chantry and Bishop Perowne CofE College.

Aims

The aim of the partnership is to provide local secondary school pupils with opportunities to develop rugby skills and participate in a well-organised, enjoyable tournament. The identified need was to encourage participation in rugby and provide competitive fixtures for local schools. Critical factors for success include strong planning, expert coaching, effective officiating, and ensuring all participants enjoyed a positive sporting experience.

The day began with a structured warm-up and skills coaching session led by RGS Worcester rugby coaches, allowing pupils to develop core techniques and build confidence ahead of competitive play. This was followed by a round-robin tournament, with all teams playing each other in a series of well-contested matches.

Background

The event was developed through the Wyre Forest Sports Partnership, responding to a recognised lack of competitive rugby opportunities for local secondary schools.

RGS Worcester identified the opportunity to host and facilitate a centralised event that would bring schools together through sport. This was a new initiative introduced this year.

Resources

The tournament took place at RGS Worcester's Flagge Meadow Sports Ground and Pavilion, making full use of RGS Worcester’s sports facilities.

The event was supported by four members of RGS sports staff, one catering staff member and one additional support staff member. The session ran for approximately three hours. The event was free of charge, with catering provided for pupils and visiting staff. RGS sports staff supported the event throughout, refereeing and guiding games. Medals and certificates were presented to the winning team, with certificates awarded to all participants.

Impact

As a new event, formal assessment is planned following future iterations. Initial qualitative feedback highlighted high levels of pupil engagement, enjoyment and competitive spirit.

Anticipated outcomes include increased participation in rugby, improved confidence and skill development among pupils and stronger sporting links between local secondary schools.

Pupil Involvement

The event involved Year 8 and 9 pupils from local secondary schools, supported by RGS Worcester sports staff. Pupils were aged between 12 and 15 and the tournament was for boys’ teams.

Frequency

This was a single event, introduced this year, with plans for it to run annually. The intention is for the partnership and tournament to continue long-term, providing regular rugby opportunities for local secondary schools.
