Football Tournament for Year 5 pupils
In the inaugural Year Five Mixed Football Tournament at RGS Worcester, 60 children from six local primary schools—Claines, Leigh & Bransford, Hollymount, St George’s Catholic, St Clements, and St Barnabas—came together for a fun and competitive day of football. The teams participated in a round-robin format, with medals and certificates awarded to the winning and runner-up teams. Parents were invited to watch the event. The tournament was designed to offer local primary school children an opportunity to engage in football, promoting teamwork and physical activity.
Aims
The tournament aimed to provide a fun, inclusive environment where local primary school children could enjoy playing football and develop sportsmanship. The identified need was to offer a platform for younger pupils to experience a well-organised sports event. Critical success factors included ensuring all participants enjoyed the event, smooth planning, and effective collaboration between RGS sports staff and sports leaders.
Background
This tournament was a new initiative launched in 2025. RGS Worcester identified the opportunity to bring local primary schools together through sport, developing community spirit and promoting physical activity at a young age.
Resources
The event took place at the Flagge Meadow Sports Ground and Pavilion, utilising school facilities. RGS provided two sports staff, catering, and three additional support staff, totalling six staff members for the event. The tournament lasted for four hours and was offered free of charge, with catering included for all participants.
Impact
While the event is new, it has already shown a positive impact on the local community by providing an opportunity for primary school children to engage in sport. The event encouraged positive relationships between RGS Worcester and local schools, and there is potential for long-term benefits in terms of increased physical activity and community engagement. Future assessments will measure participant enjoyment and feedback to refine and grow the event annually.
Pupil Involvement
Year Five pupils from six local primary schools participated in the tournament, alongside RGS sports BTEC students who assisted as leaders and coaches. The event included both mixed-gender teams of children aged 9 and 10, with leadership from RGS sixth form students.
Frequency
This is a one-time event held in 2025, with plans for it to become an annual fixture in the school’s sporting calendar.
