Maths Mentors

As part of our Friday Partnership program, we have a group of Maths A' Level students who visit local Primary Schools to help support the learning of Maths within the classroom.

Aims

To create a pathway for young people to improve their maths skills with the help of our A level Maths students and to develop a mutually beneficial partnership between the two schools with a particular focus on Maths reinforcement activities. For our Sixth Form mentors the aim is to help develop their communication, social and leadership skills.

Background

This is a new initiative this year. The Head of Partnership in discussion with some Partnership Primary schools identified a need for some reinforcement Maths activities with primarily Year 5 and 6 children. The impact of covid lockdowns had the effect that some children needed to rebuild their confidence and extend their skills in Maths and would benefit from some one-to -one activities and support from some older mentors.

Resources

The Head of Partnership coordinates the programme, and the school provides transport for the Sixth Form students to attend their Partnership schools. We also provide a dedicated Maths teacher who visits a Partnership School weekly to run Maths masterclasses.

Pupil Involvement

This project involves a group of 12 Sixth Form Maths mentors and one Maths Teacher. They work alongside groups of Year 5 and 6 pupils

Frequency

Ongoing weekly activity.
