Geology sessions
Geology sessions for whole classes and SEND groups on fossils and volcanoes matched to the primary curriculum. 60 pupils from St John's Primary School and 120 pupils from Wincheap Primary School. Feedback from the class teacher included:
"Thank you so much for a superb input on volcanoes. It was fascinating. One of the children doesn't usually come to class but he stayed for nearly the whole hour - wow! Your time is much appreciated."
"Wow! That was great - thank you so much. The children listened so well because they were interested and I was pleased with their questions. They were thrilled with their fossil box and spent a long time choosing which one to take home. One of the members of the class is very interested in dinosaurs and fossils and was moved to tears because it was 'the happiest day of my life!' Thank you again."
Aims
To introduce pupils to Geology as a subject and to allow them hands-on experience of fossils and other artefacts.
Aimed at Year 5 and 6 pupils (though others may benefit too).
Background
Established through links with local schools and our partnerships team.
Resources
Critical resources include the Geology lab, our expert subject leader and the extensive fossil collection.
Sessions take place on alternate weeks, according to demand.
All sessions are free of charge. Pupils receive parting gifts of pencil cases and fossils.
Impact
Impact evaluation is ongoing. Pupils attend as whole class groups.
From partner primary teacher:
"Can I pass on the thanks and praise of staff here at XX Primary for the fossils, breakfasts, lunches and science assembly. Our staff are commenting on how well looked after they are when over at Kings, how good you all are as teachers and interacting with the children, how interesting the fossil/cathedral tour was etc. Thank you all so much. It really makes me happy how well the partnership is going."
Pupil Involvement
Year 5 and 6, approx 25 pupils per visit. Pupil premium percentages are around 40% in our partner primary schools.
Frequency
These are one-off events on a rolling programme, and are likely to roll-out to include larger events in the Summer term especially.
