Exploring Classics

A project to introduce year 8 students from Spires Academy to classical civilization, history and Latin.

The students come to The King's School on alternate weeks for a year. The sessions are led by a member of The King's classics department with the lessons assisted and partially taught by our King’s classicists. The Spires Academy students are set homework after each lesson.

Aims

The aim is twofold.

Firstly to give Spires Academy students an opportunity to learn Latin and about classical civilisation. These subjects are not taught at Spires Academy.

Secondly to challenge our King's School Canterbury Latin and Classics students to produce lessons and lesson plans and stretch their knowledge of Latin and Classics.

Background

The partnership came about due to the success of the Cathedral Spires project.

The project started in September 2018 and is under review, hopefully to relaunch.

Resources

The Exploring Classics students use a classroom in the King's School. The project is led by our classics students but overseen by a member of the Classics teaching staff.

Pupil Involvement

8 year 8 students from Spires Academy.

4 King's School classics students.

1 member of King's School staff and 1 member of staff from Spires Academy.

Frequency

This is an ongoing project.

The Spires Academy students visit once every two weeks throughout the school year. They are set homework for the weeks when they are not at King's and the King's students use this time to prepare the next lesson.
