YEAR 6 - THRIVE

The students from across each school will combine to work collaboratively. This course is designed to inspire, build self-confidence, self-efficacy and self-esteem, citizenship and help with the transition from year 6 into secondary school. This through the medium of Drama, Music and Outdoor Education.

Aims

The aims are to raise self-esteem, self-efficacy, and self-confidence. Raise aspirations and school attendance, and have a greater understanding of students from different backgrounds.

Background

The foundations for philanthropy and partnerships were laid over 100 years ago, by the four pioneering women who founded the GDST. They not only believed that girls should be entitled to the same academic education as their brothers but also that a GDST education should be accessible to able girls, whatever their background, and so scholarships were offered from the outset. This principle is still fundamental to the GDST today and across the 25-school network, financial assistance is given to approximately 1,100 girls every year.

Resources

Students from our Partnership schools utilise the facilities at Wimbledon High to cover a carousel of activities lead by teaching staff from Wimbledon High. Additionally, having Wimbledon Common nearby allows the students to have the physical space to experiment with using voices and physicality in a way that helps them to feel more confident, empowered and able to face new challenges.

Pupil Involvement

This programme incorporates WHS Year 6 students working alongside our partner schools and WHS Y11 and Y12 students. Each student has a 1:1(2) Y11 or Y12 mentor from WHS. 5 mixed school and mixed gender groups working through a carousel of activities. 85 external students, 25 internal YR6 and 55 internal Y11 & Y12. All year 11 and year 12 students are involved in at least one programme during their time in these year groups, and with a drive to push increased partnerships work during co-curricular time, more opportunities are opening for the younger year groups.

Frequency

THRIVE is an Autumn and Spring term 15-week programme that takes place on a Thursday afternoon for an hour for 110 students from class groups.
