Teach Together Maths at West Wimbledon Primary School

Wimbledon High School have partnered with West Wimbledon Primary School for the Teach Together Maths programme. The programme gives our students the unique opportunity to initially, be taught how to teach by Wimbledon High staff, before heading out to one of our partner schools, in this case, West Wimbledon Primary. It will follow the very successful model the science department have delivered over the last two years called ISSP, however, the range of subjects is much more diverse. The Teach Together programme benefits not only our state partner schools, but also WHS students. We have seen a growth in confidence in personal delivery and a more thorough understanding of students from different backgrounds.

  • To spark a love of learning Maths amongst the Primary students.
  • To enrich students and expose them to areas of Maths beyond the curriculum.
  • Recognising patterns and connections between topics in Maths.
  • Increased confidence in their approach to solving unseen problems.
  • Strengthening their number skills from lessons by applying to topics not on the primary. curriculum, such as the Fibonacci sequence, fractals and the Golden Ratio.
  • This model can also be shared with other schools.

The Teach Together project as a whole commenced in September 2017 at Wimbledon High School whereby we reached out to a number of schools to invite them to collaborate with us. Our Sixth formers have gained new skills and increased confidence in their ability to explain new concepts in different ways to ensure all pupils gain good knoweledge and understanding. They have also developed patience from working with the Year 6 children and an appreciation of the skill that goes into planning meaningful enrichment sessions.

One member of teaching staff leads the Teach Together Maths project in collaboration with West Wimbledon High School.

The project is assessed termly both qualitatatively and quantiatively. The outcomes are TBC, however, we have seen a growth in confidence in our students at Wimbledon High as well as the partner school's children benefiting from a fresh and fun method of delivering maths.

Pupil Involvement

10 girls from Sixth Form are involved from Wimbledon High School and 8 Year 6 G&T students are involved at West Wimbledon primary.

The Teach Together project runs for a total of 20 weeks from September through to Easter. This opportunity will be on offer every school year for the forseeable future.
