German Club with Yrs 5 and 6 St Joseph’s and Brookfield students

A Channing teacher works with Year 5 and Year 6  pupils from St Joseph’s Primary School and Brookfield Primary School at Channing Senior School to help them learn German and boost their self-confidence. She is assisted by two Year 7 students from Channing.

Aims

To create a pathway for St Joseph’s and Brookfield pupils to help them learn German in an environment where learning is seen as fun and goes beyond the classroom. We also support those students to build their confidence.  German is not offered at either school.

Background

This is a new initiative which started in Autumn 2022 for two terms.  Building on our relationship with St. Joseph’s Primary School, Year 5 and 6 students (Pupil Premium and High Attaining students) were offered the opportunity to have introductory lessons in German at Channing School. They were then joined for a term by Brookfield Primary School. This German club focussed on developing academic enrichment in a fun environment.

Resources

The German teacher from Channing teaches the lesson during her free time and each student is provided with essential resources (notebook, worksheets, and other relevant material).

Impact

The Year 5 and 6 students at both schools quickly picked up the language, retaining the new vocabulary very well and picking up the concept of an inflected language. They showed great enthusiasm for the lessons and developed in confidence across the sessions.  There was also an opportunity to engage with German culture and one of the students entered a competition to show his enthusiasm.

Pupil Involvement

Year 5 and Year 6 pupils from St Joseph’s and Brookfield received German teaching from a Channing teacher as German is not taught at their schools. She was assisted by two Year 7 students from Channing.

Frequency

This is a weekly activity which is 45 minutes in length for two terms.
