Robotics Club with St Aloysius' College
A Channing computing teacher works with Year 7 and 8 pupils from St Aloysius at Channing Senior School to help them learn to build and program robots and boost their self-confidence.
Aims
To create a pathway for St Aloysius pupils to help them learn about engineering and robotics alongside Channing pupils, in an environment where learning is seen as fun and goes beyond the classroom. We also support those students to build their confidence.
Background
This initiative started in September 2022. Building on our relationship with St. Aloysius RC College, Year 7 and 8 students were offered the opportunity to write code and build and programme robots alongside Channing students at Channing School. Students also learn to create their own apps.
Resources
The club is taught by a Channing computing teacher with the help of Year 11 volunteers. The students use the IT facilities at Channing, and have access to VEX IQ robotics kits.
Impact
Students have grown more confident when programming and coding in Javascript. They have recently designed their own multiplication app, and look forward to creating apps to help with revision in the future. The students have worked together on these projects and not only gained an understanding of the techniques and technology but also worked with other students to solve problems and work out solutions.
Pupil Involvement
Year 7 & 8 pupils from St Aloysius and Channing are taught to code and program by a Channing computing teacher with the assistance of Year 11 volunteers, using Channing’s IT facilities.
Frequency
This is a weekly activity which is 40 minutes in length.
