Chess Club at Channing

A member of the Channing teaching staff supports Year 7 and Year 8 students from St Aloysius who attend a weekly Chess club at Channing.

Aims

To create an opportunity for the students to improve their chess skills by playing with a greater variety of opponents, whilst building their confidence and developing new friendships.

Background

This initiative started in October 2023 and is offered to Year 7 and Year 8 students from St Aloysius.  We wanted to offer this opportunity to students who may not otherwise be able to participate in extra curricular clubs.  St Aloysius is encouraging its students to take part in the club, which is beneficial to both schools and their students.

Resources

A member of Channing staff as well as chess sets are made available for the club.

Impact

Students enjoy learning a new game that they may not have previously considered and existing players will have the opportunity to improve their chess skills in a new and safe environment which is stimulating.

Pupil Involvement

All Year 7 and 8 students are encouraged to play chess, and all are welcomed - absolute beginners to more experienced players.

Frequency

This is a weekly activity from 1pm to 1.30pm every Tuesday in term-time.
