Reading Club at St Joseph’s

Year 9 Channing student volunteers work with KS1 pupils from St Joseph’s School onsite at St Joseph’s to help them learn to read and boost their self-confidence.

Aims

To create a pathway for St Joseph’s pupils to help them learn to read in an environment where learning is seen as fun and goes beyond the classroom. We also support those students to build their confidence.  For our Year 9 volunteers the aim is to help develop their communication, social and leadership skills.

Background

This is a new initiative which started in Spring 2022.  Through Channing’s partnership with Highgate Newtown Community Partners (HNCP) and Brookfield Primary School, a discussion was held regarding ‘Education +’. We are expanding to include other local state schools, including St Joseph’s which is in the HNCP catchment area. We wanted to develop academic enrichment for students, in particular those who are Pupil Premium.

Resources

Year 9 volunteers from Channing Senior School walk to St Joseph’s School with a Channing teacher to supervise to help the St Joseph's KS1 pupils with learning to read.

Impact

KS1 students have the opportunity to practise their reading; some of them may not normally have the opportunity to read regularly at home. The students' self confidence is built up whilst relationships are forged between students.  Year 9 students focus on leadership skills and working towards understanding the way to help improve students’ reading skills.

Pupil Involvement

The club involves a group of Year 9 volunteers helping KS1 pupils with their reading.

Frequency

This is a weekly activity which is 25 minutes in length, as a pre-school activity.
