KS5 Medical Discussion Group St Aloysius’ College

Channing’s Biology teacher works with Year 13 pupils from St Aloysius and Channing at Channing Senior School to help them learn to discuss medical matters and boost their self-confidence and knowledge.

Aims

To create a pathway for St Aloysius and Channing School pupils to help them learn to discuss medical matters in a collaborative environment and boost their knowledge base. We aim to build students' confidence.  The students work together as a group, dividing up responsibilities and building both their team working and collaboration skills.

Background

This initiative started in September 2022 and is offered to Year 13 pupils from St Aloysius, alongside Yr 12 and 13 Channing pupils. We wanted to develop academic enrichment for students, particularly those who may not otherwise be able to participate in extra curricular clubs.  St. Aloysius are encouraging their students to participate in this medical discussion group, which is beneficial to both schools.

Resources

The school provides a sandwich lunch for the students from both schools, and a specialist Medical School coordinator, to run a Medical Discussion Group hosted at Channing for Year 13 pupils from St Aloysius and Year 12 and 13 students from Channing. Each student is provided with essential resources and access to devices and technology to help with their research.

Impact

Students have become more confident with public speaking and volunteering their opinions, engaging with external speakers and complex medical dilemmas as well as preparation for the interviews. They will continue with the club next year.

Pupil Involvement

The group is for potential medical students both at St Aloysius and Channing Schools, to enhance their discussion skills and knowledge base for a medical application.

Frequency

This is a weekly activity which is 40 minutes in length.
