Latin Club
A Channing teacher works with Year 7 pupils from St Aloysius and Parliament Hill at Channing Senior School to help them learn Latin and boost their self-confidence.
Aims
To create a pathway for St Aloysius and Parliament Hill pupils to help them learn Latin in an environment where learning is seen as fun and goes beyond the classroom. We also support those students to build their confidence. Latin is not offered at either St. Aloysius nor Parliament Hill school.
Background
This is a new initiative which started in Summer 2022 Building on our relationship with St. Aloysius College, Year 7 and 8 students (PP and High Attaining students) were offered the opportunity to have introductory lessons in Latin at Channing School. Parliament Hill, who like St. Aloysius does not offer Latin and Channing therefore took the opportunity to also ask whether Year 7 would also like to attend. This Latin club focussed on developing academic enrichment.
Resources
The Head of Classics teaches the lesson during her free time and each student is provided with essential resources (notebook, worksheets, and other relevant material including access to VR sets).
Impact
The Year 7-8 students at both schools quickly picked up the language, retaining the new vocabulary very well and picking up the concept of an inflected language. They showed great enthusiasm for the stories as well as the civilisation content, such as Pompeian houses and Roman food. They developed in confidence across the sessions and were often able to make links between Latin and French.
Pupil Involvement
Year 7 pupils from St Aloysius and Parliament Hill are receiving Latin teaching from a Channing teacher as Latin is not taught at their schools.
Frequency
This is a weekly activity which is 45 minutes in length.
