Baking Club at La Sainte Union
Pupils from Channing Senior School go to La Sainte Union (LSU) to bake and form new friendships with pupils.
Aims
These are stand-alone sessions that take place at LSU. The aim is for pupils to learn new skills whilst working with pupils from another school. Pupils from both schools benefit from this session; KS3 pupils at LSU do not have food technology lessons and Channing does not have food technology classrooms and therefore these sessions address this. In addition pupils learn how to work with a pupil that they do not know thus developing their social skills.
Background
This initiative started as a one-off session organised by HNCP (Highgate Newtown Community Partners) as part of their Education+ programme. The idea was to pick apples at the orchard at LSU and bake apple crumble together. The session was so successful and enjoyable for all that it was decided that this could be a regular event for Year 7 and 8 pupils working on a carousel basis.
Resources
Channing’s catering staff run the session with supervision from Channing and LSU teachers. HNCP pay for resources, e.g. ingredients.
Impact
Students have become more confident with baking, following recipes, going to new places and making new friends.
Pupil Involvement
10 pupils from each school take part in the sessions. We vary the pupils who take part in order to allow as many pupils to take part as possible.
Frequency
This is a monthly activity that lasts two hours.
