Science - Transition Lessons for Year 6, June 2019
On 20 and 27 June 2019 32 Year 6 pupils from St John’s Primary School were taught 3 Science transition lessons in Biology, Chemistry and Physics in the Walthamstow Hall BiOlogy, Chemistry and Physics laboratories, to help prepare them for science lessons at their secondary schools. On 25 June 32 Year 6 pupils from Lady Boswell’s Primary were also taught the three transition lessons. The lessons were taught by Walthamstow Hall Science teachers, supported by Walthamstow Hall Science technicians.
Aims
To help prepare Year 6 pupils for Science lessons at Senior School. Enabling them to feel at home in a science laboratory and to give them experience in handling scientific equipment, health and safety and how to conduct experiments.
Background
The opportunity was identified by Walthamstow Hall's Science Department. The scheme has been running for three years.
Resources
The transition lessons take place in Walthamstow Hall science laboratories, using Walthamstow Hall equipment. The lessons are facilitated by Walthamstow Hall Science teachers and technicians.
Impact
The lessons are very well received by both the primary school pupils and their teachers.
Pupil Involvement
The lessons are run by tecahing staff rather than Walthamtow Hall students.
Frequency
The transition lessons take place in the Summer term each year.
