Drama: Sharing Theatre Facilities
St John’s Primary School use Walthamstow Hall’s Ship Theatre each autumn term for two performances of their Christmas Concert and every summer for two performances of their Summer Production. St John’s also have exclusive use of the theatre for rehearsals in the days leading up to these productions.
Other organisations also use the Theatre and Hall, for example the Sevenoaks Literary Festival, Steephill School and four drama clubs. One, the JPA Academy, is a Performing Arts organisation teaching song, dance and acting to young children. They meet weekly, making use of three spaces, including a Drama Studio.
Aims
To provide St John's pupils with a professional, fully equipped theatre space in which they can experience musical and theatrical performance.
Background
The use of the Walthamstow Hall theatre by St John's was a natural progression from the Sixth Form volunteering programme and St John's pupils attending previews of Walthamstow Hall plays.
Resources
St John's have full use of the Walthamstow Hall theatre including the sound and lighting rig and desk. They are often assisted by Walthamstow Hall theatre technicians. Walthamstow Hall also provides a reception space where St John's can host interval refreshments. St John's have full use of the theatre for several rehearsal days leading up to each performance. Peformances usually run over two days. There is no charge to St John's.
Pupil Involvement
Walthamstow Hall pupils are not involved in this partnership.
Frequency
St John's currently use the theatre twice a year, in the autumn for their Christmas concert and in the summer for their School play.
