French Debating
UCS holds a annual French debating competition with LAE Stratford. Each school sends two teams made up of Year 12 French students and each team prepares one debate. The motions are drawn from the AQA French A Level syllabus, which is the exam board that both schools use.
Aims
We hold a annual French debating competition with LAE Stratford. Each school sends two teams made up of Year 12 French students and each team prepares one debate. The motions are drawn from the AQA French A Level syllabus, which is the exam board that both schools use.
Background
Before the debate, students take part in a French icebreaker activity so that they feel more comfortable with each other. For the debate itself, students are not told until the last minute which side they will be defending, so they have to prepare both sides thoroughly in advance. After the debate, student take part in a more informal discussion activity in mixed groups.
Impact
The project brings several benefits to both sets of students. As well as developing their communication, public speaking and debating skills, they consolidate their knowledge of topics they have studied. The opportunity to interact with pupils from another school exposes them to different facets and approaches to these topics. Additionally, it is a good experience for the students to meet other young people who are studying A Level French.
