'Girls into STEM' outreach workshop
The Maynard ‘Girls into STEM’ day involved 90 girls, including 40 from local schools. They took part in engineering challenges and mathematical problems and were joined by expert engineers and scientists, who delivered presentations on their varied and exciting careers.
Aims
To provide a STEM resource to local state schools, with experts speakers and organisers and to promote Girls in STEM subjects.
Background
The science department initiated this project as a resource for our own students and the wider community. It has been going since 2016.
Resources
We use the school buildings to host the event and our specialist science teachers. We also invite experts in STEM to give talks and help with the event.
The event lasts a day. No financial contribution - catering covered by Maynard.
Impact
We gain feedback from schools and hope to see more girls going on to study STEM subjects.
Pupil Involvement
Year 10 students from The Maynard and local state schools. Girls work in teams to solve a number of STEM challenges. All female.
Frequency
Yearly project.
