The power of ownership - Children's Book Project
An initiative to help disadvantaged children overcome book poverty which has been shown to have a direct correlation to educational attainment. More information on the project can be found here.
Aims
An initiative to help disadvantaged children overcome book poverty which has been shown to have a direct correlation to educational attainment.
In London, the charity itself runs the Book Drive, collects the books and disseminates them to targeted schools and nurseries who then distribute to families within their communities. Outside of London whoever decides to take part in the initiative has to do the planning and running the events and then delivering the donations to the chosen target schools.
Resources
We ran the project for World Book Day to support the aims of the charity. Our whole school community was asked to donate a book they no longer needed and was happy to donate to a disadvantaged child. We have collected over 200 books from both pupils and staff.
Impact
Over 150 good quality children's fiction and non-fiction books have been donated to Fulbourn Primary School. The children have sent us a Thank you card (it has been given to Marketing to use for a write up to go on our school website and once returned it will be displayed in the LRC.)
Pupil Involvement
Many of our students brought in their unwanted books. A group of 7 Year 9 students sorted the books by age appropriateness and quality, before the books were delivered to the target school. Fulbourn Primary has about 300 pupils.
Frequency
We ran the event as a one-off event. Information about the project was sent to parents on 25 February in preparation for World Book Day on 3 March, collection took place on 2 & 3 March in the LRC and the Staff Room.
