STEM Solutions Towards a Sustainable World Conference

A one day conference focussing on STEM is held every two years, with invitations circulated to a variety of state and independent schools in the Eastern region. Each conference focusses on a different aspect of STEM. During one conference, speakers included Dame Barbara Stocking, Dr Nadine Johnston (British Antarctic Survey), and a variety of female STEM professionals from a wide range of disciplines.

Aims

To encourage and raise the aspirations of women who wish enter into the field of STEM in further or higher education.

Background

The project is has been running since 2008, with five conferences having been held to date.

Resources

All of the administration for the event is undertaken by St Mary’s. Financial support is provided by GSA schools in the Eastern Region and 2017 saw the second event run with support and partnership from UTC, Cambridge.

Impact

The general feedback from schools has been very positive, with many expressing their gratitude and stating that they had enjoyed the event.

Pupil Involvement

Approximately 300 girls in Years 10 and 11; 7 state schools were involved.
