Spanish Language Club

Priestley Primary School, Calne introduced Spanish to their curriculum this academic year.

A small group of A Level Spanish students have prepared and led a weekly after school Spanish club at the primary school to help raise interest and enthusiasm for language learning in the primary school. The experience has been equally rewarding for the Sixth Formers who have risen the the challenge of doing something out of their comfort zone.

Aims

The aim was to support Priestley Primary School as it introduced Spanish to their curriculum. This is their first experience of delivering a MFL. It also provided St Mary's Hispanists with an opporunity to volunteer in the community in a meaningful way. It has taken the students out of their familiar comfort zone and provided them with an opportunity to give service.

Background

St Mary's Head of Community Outreach met with the Headmaster from Priestley Primary School to explore ways in which the two schools could work together collaboratively for mutual benefit.

Resources

A willing group of primary school students to attend the language club is needed along with A Level Hispanists. The club takes place at the primary school which is in walking distance for the students.

A member of the primary school teaching staff is also in attendance to supervise the younger children.

Impact

The primary school students have grown in confidence and learnt new language in the clubs.

The A level volunteers have also grown in confidence and learnt how to engage their audience and how to plan and deliver a lesson.

Pupil Involvement

Primary school (boys and girls) participants are from Key Stage 2 and the volunteers are from Key Stage 4.

Frequency

This club takes place once a week during term time at the Primary School. It has been runnning since Autumn 2019. The programme is ongoing.
