German Theatre Production
St Mary’s invited schools to join us for the German theatre performance of “Das schlimmste Hotel”.
German actors performed the play entirely in German and it was accessible to Years 8 and above. The choice of vocabulary was well connected to the GCSE syllabus and presented in a creative and entertaining manner. Members of the audience were invited to participate.
After the production the audience was invited to ask the actors questions in German.
Aims
The aim was to form new partnerships with schools in the area who still offer German as part of the curriculum, to enable students from state schools to participate in this learning experience and provide new opportunities for German teaching staff to network.
This is all part of the wider aim to develop a hub of German excellence here at St Mary’s with the support of the Goethe Institut London and Oxford University.
Background
There was a desire to provide enrichment opportunities for German learners. St Mary's Head of German invited students and teachers from a range of schools to join us for the event.
Resources
A suitable space for the performance is required as is effective communication between partners from local schools. The production took place in the St Mary's school theatre.
Teachers from all schools were present to support the event.
St Mary's covered the cost of the performance and individual schools covered the cost of transport to and from the venue.
Impact
Students were very enthusiastic about the event in advance. They were clearly entertained and very much enjoyed the collaborative experience. Being able to understand the play boosted student confidence.
Staff were able to network which will make it easier to create new partnership opportunities moving forwards.
Pupil Involvement
Year 8 upwards, both boys and girls.
Frequency
This was the first event of its kind and it is hoped that this can become an annual event.
