Impact Statement

Our Director of Art has founded SWAT or South West Artist Teachers which welcomes anyone in North Wiltshire or the wider south west area who is passionate about art, craft and design education in both formal and informal settings, involving any age group, sector or level. The aim is to regularly meet on an informal basis to share experiences, ideas and questions as well as skills, knowledge and creativity so that together we can shape the future of art education in our locality. One local primary school and one local secondary school are involved at the moment.

Our Classics department initiated and led a joint visit to Newnham College, Cambridge with a large secondary state school from Middlesex. This involved a Q and A with Professor Mary Beard and a tour of the college.

Our ongoing partnership with Priestley Primary School in Calne has seen every pupil in this primary school (250) involved in project work with St Mary’s. Our LVI students ran lacrosse workshops for students from a variety of year groups. They organised a plan for the afternoon and taught the children a number of different skills before running a variety of different games for them. They worked hard to engage children who were out of their comfort zone whilst also seeking to stretch those who were very able. This will be repeated no an annual basis. The Science department launched their science week with an interactive lecture to the whole school and a morning of workshops for Yr 4,5 and 6.

We organised and hosted a primary schools lecture for British Science Week, working with 80 students from two local primary schools, Fynamore and Heddington. A member of the science department also ran an afternoon of demonstrations during the week at Fynamore. In addition students from Fynamore spent a day learning a range of musical theatre songs and dances from the musicals ‘Matlida’, ‘Seussical the Musical’ and ‘Annie’. At the end of the day, they performed their pieces to teachers and parents.

St Mary's has initiated a Theatre in Education Scheme with Colerne CofE Primary School. This involved performances of short, prepared plays by the year 10 Drama Group that would impart a message (e.g. peer pressure\healthy eating etc.) using Drama skills to present the ideas in an engaging, age-appropriate way to the primary school children (age 9-11).

We have a long-standing collaboration with Springfields, a special school next door to St Mary’s. LVI and UVI pupils volunteer for 1 hour/week to work with pupils individually or in small groups in a classroom. St Mary’s staff and other pupils also organise activities and events for Springfields pupils e.g language sessions for AG&T.

We offer Scholarships for pupils entering the school at 11+, 13+ and Sixth Form.  Scholarships available:

FOUNDATION AWARDS
One Foundation Award is available annually at 11+ to gifted and talented pupils from the state education sector who, for reasons of financial restriction, might otherwise be prevented from applying to the school.  All Foundation Scholarships are retained to the end of the Sixth Form.  The Scholarships are means-tested and could reduce the Day Fees by up to 100%.

At 11+, the Scholarships are granted solely on merit as the result of competitive examination and require the support of a candidate’s Head Teacher. Candidates sit examinations in English and a computerised test to assess their verbal and non-verbal reasoning skills and their numerical ability.  In addition, they are interviewed by a member of teaching staff and the Head.

Applicants should register interest in the Scholarships in September of the year preceding entry.

CGA BURSARIES
Bursaries from the Calne Foundation Trust Bursary Fund may be available.  This Fund has benefited enormously from the generous gifts from Old Girls of their own charitable fund and the Matthews Bursary Fund.  Means-tested bursaries are, therefore, available for the daughters of former pupils wishing to enter the school.  Once awarded, bursaries are usually paid termly, and reviewed annually, to confirm that the parents' financial situation is unchanged.

HM FORCES DISCOUNT
For members of the permanent Armed Forces (or reservists on full-time duties, for the duration of those duties) a means-tested discount of up to 20% is offered.
