Poetry to Performance Day

St Gabriel’s recently hosted a Poetry to Performance Day, welcoming nine local primary schools to explore the world of poetry. Pupils spent the day immersed in the school’s grounds and natural surroundings, using the environment as inspiration for their creative writing.

During the day, pupils learned about poetic techniques and engaged in hands-on writing activities, guided by St Gabriel’s Drama and English Departments. Each group then crafted their own original poems, drawing on their observations and experiences of nature. The day culminated in performances of their work to parents, allowing pupils to share their creativity and build confidence in public speaking.

The event fostered creativity, collaboration, and a love of literature, while also providing an opportunity for local primary schools to connect with St Gabriel’s and benefit from its resources and expertise. Pupils left the day with a deeper understanding of poetry, a sense of achievement, and memories of a truly inspiring outdoor learning experience.

Background

·       How the Case Study / Partnership Came About:
The Poetry to Performance Day was developed by St Gabriel’s as part of its commitment to creative outreach and cross-school collaboration. The initiative aimed to provide primary school pupils with an immersive, hands-on experience in poetry and performance, using the school grounds and nature as inspiration.

·       Who Identified the Opportunity and How:
The opportunity was identified by St Gabriel’s head of drama and director of partnerships in consultation with senior leadership. They noticed a demand among local primary schools for interactive, enriching literary experiences beyond the classroom and designed the event to meet this need while showcasing the school’s expertise and resources.

·       How Long Has It Been Established:
This is the first year the event has been run. It was highly sought after by local primary schools, with nine schools participating and a total of 84 children attending. The success of the inaugural event has laid the foundation for it to become a regular annual celebration of poetry, creativity, and collaboration.

Resources

Use of School Facilities:

The school grounds and outdoor spaces were used as inspiration for writing activities, including sunflower planting to fit the theme of “helping creativity grow.”
The external marquee was used for writing workshops, rehearsals, and performances. This Area was also allocated for lunch and parent tea and cake during the performances.
Use of Staff:

Both teaching and non-teaching staff were essential:
Teaching staff guided poetry workshops, supported writing and performance activities, and facilitated pupil engagement.
Non-teaching staff helped with supervision, logistics, and running refreshments along with permissions and dietary requirement permissions.
Numbers and Duration:

Approximately 8 staff members were involved, supporting 84 pupils from nine primary schools.
Staff were engaged throughout the full school day, including supervision during outdoor activities, workshops, performances, and meal times.
Logistical Support:

School minibuses were used to transport pupils from partner schools to St Gabriel’s.
Lunch and refreshments were provided for pupils, and parents were welcomed for tea and cake during the performances.
Financial Contribution:

Costs included materials for workshops, sunflower planting, lunches, and refreshments, largely funded by St Gabriel’s as part of its outreach and enrichment programme.

Impact

Qualitative Assessment:

Staff observe pupils’ engagement, creativity, and confidence during the writing and performance activities.
Informal feedback is collected from pupils and teachers on enjoyment, learning, and inspiration gained from the day.
The event allows pupils to express themselves and take pride in their work, giving immediate insight into personal and creative development.
Quantitative Assessment:

At this stage, there is no formal numerical assessment of skills, but participation is tracked: 84 pupils from nine primary schools attended.
Completion of workshops and participation in performances serve as measurable outcomes of engagement.
Frequency of Assessment:

Assessment currently occurs once per event, through observation and informal feedback during and immediately after the day. A final performance showcases final work and outcomes.

Pupil Involvement:

84 Pupils from nine visiting primary schools were actively involved throughout the day.
They participated in creative writing workshops, outdoor inspiration activities, sunflower planting, and poetry performances.
Pupils were encouraged to contribute ideas, collaborate with peers, and share their work, ensuring equal engagement for all participants.
Age of Pupils:

The pupils were typically 8–9 years old, corresponding to Years 4 in the UK primary system.
Gender of Pupils:

Participation was mixed-gender, with activities designed to be inclusive and engaging for all, regardless of gender or prior experience with poetry.
