Language Olympics with local primary schools

St Gabriel’s hosted an exciting Language Olympics, welcoming three external primary schools alongside one internal group for a day dedicated to celebrating language learning. Each school brought six enthusiastic pupils who took part in a variety of engaging activities designed to develop their linguistic knowledge and communication skills. The event encouraged collaboration, creativity, and a love of languages, providing pupils with a fun and inspiring opportunity to explore the power of words and cross-cultural communication.

Aims

To strengthen partnerships between St Gabriel’s and local primary schools through a shared celebration of language learning.

To inspire enthusiasm for languages, encouraging pupils to continue their linguistic journey into secondary education.

To develop communication, collaboration, and problem-solving skills through engaging and interactive language-based activities.

To enhance cultural awareness and appreciation of linguistic diversity among participating pupils.

To foster mutual learning and exchange between staff and pupils from different schools, supporting ongoing collaboration.

To celebrate achievement and creativity in languages within a supportive, community-focused environment.

Background

The partnership between St Gabriel’s and local primary schools began from the school’s ongoing commitment to promoting language learning and collaborative educational experiences. The opportunity was identified by the Language Department in consultation with senior leadership, who recognised that neighbouring primary schools were keen to enhance pupils’ exposure to languages before moving to secondary education. This led to the creation of the inaugural Language Olympics, where pupils from four external schools and one internal group spent a day engaging in fun, interactive activities designed to develop linguistic knowledge, communication skills, and cultural awareness.

Pupil Involvement

Pupils from St Gabriel’s, the independent school, and three partner primary schools are fully involved in every aspect of the Language Olympics. They take part in interactive language challenges, team-based activities, and collaborative problem-solving tasks, with equal opportunities to contribute ideas, lead activities, and support their peers. Pupils also actively celebrate achievements, assist with presentations, and share outcomes at the end of the day.

All participants are Year 5 students, aged 9–10. Participation is mixed-gender, ensuring boys and girls from all schools are equally involved. Activities are designed to be inclusive and engaging for all pupils, regardless of gender, language ability, or prior experience.
