Maths Academy
Sixth form pupils from Ashford School mentor local primary pupils in solving mathematical problems and logic puzzles in creative and interesting ways. The younger pupils will be guided through problem solving strategies that are useful both academically and in everyday life.
Aims
Supporting local Primary Schools with academic extension in maths.
Background
This pilot project was the result of conversations between the headteachers of the participating schools. Stretching the most able mathematicians and raising aspirations were seen as key targets for both the Primary schools involved. Whereas for Ashford School, the skills developed by the maths mentors were equally desirable.
Resources
The sixth form maths mentors meet weekly and we host the Primary School pupils fortnightly. This allows time for the mentors, with the support of our Head of Maths, to review and plan.
Impact
It is anticipated that the primary pupils will gain problem solving skills and confidence. This could be measured by an end of term/year collaborative task.
Pupil Involvement
There are currently 12 sixth form pupils and multiple Primary School pupils from year 5 and 6 involved in the project.
Frequency
The Maths Academy began in the 2019 academic year and is now in its fourth year.
