Junior Maths Challenge

A range of schools from the surrounding areas took part in a Junior Math's challenge day. The students worked on a variety of mathematical problems to solve in order to take the title of Math's Challenge Champions. The school offered transport to the schools to enable opportunities to as many individuals as possible.

Aims

Young mathematicians come together at St Gabriel's to participate in a series of mathematical challenges. The activities take place over two afternoons (one for Year 5 pupils, and another for Year 4 pupils) and are led DC Beagle Challenges.

Background

This has been running for over 10 years now and is highly successful in bringing students together across West Berkshire, Hampshire and Wiltshire.

Resources

The challenges are provided and run by DC Beagle Challenges. It uses the school's sports hall. There
is no requirement for teaching staff from St Gabriel's to attend, although the maths department do pop in and out throughout the sessions. The head of juniors, the principal and the admissions department attend to meet colleagues accompanying the pupils. Refreshments are provided by St Gabriel's catering department. St Gabriel's covers the and provides transport for schools requiring it.

Impact

Qualitative Assessment: Feedback is gathered from pupils, teachers, and parents following the Junior Maths Challenge to assess levels of engagement, enjoyment, and confidence in mathematical problem-solving.
Teachers observe how pupils approach complex reasoning tasks, noting improvements in perseverance, logical thinking, and collaboration.
Pupils often express increased enthusiasm for maths, seeing it as fun and creative rather than purely academic.

Quantitative Assessment: The challenge itself provides formal results and scores, allowing teachers to measure attainment and track progress over time.
Participation rates and performance comparisons between years offer useful data for evaluating the impact of the event on mathematical learning and enrichment.

Pupils develop confidence and resilience in tackling challenging problems. Improved problem-solving, reasoning, and teamwork skills. Enhanced enthusiasm for mathematics, encouraging greater participation in enrichment activities and future competitions.
Strengthened links between participating schools through shared academic challenge and celebration of achievement.

Pupil Involvement

160 - 200 x Year 5 pupils - boys and girls, including four St Gabriel's pupils from each year group.

Frequency

This is an annual event.
