Geology lessons for primary schools
RBCS partners with a number of primary schools to assist with the teaching of Geology elements of the Key Stage 1 and 2 National Curriculum.
Aims
The aim of this partnership is to facilitate the teaching of elements of the National Curriculum in primary schools. RBCS has a specialist Geology department and is able to offer resources to help the teaching of "rocks" to local schools.
Schools can visit RBCS for a bespoke 2 hour lesson in the Geology department. Alternatively, staff and pupils from RBCS can visit the primary school. If more flexibility is needed, we can loan equipment and samples to primary schools along with detailed instructions on the delivery of the subject.
The immediate beneficiaries are the pupils in the primary schools who will be able to experience specialist teaching and resources.
Background
This partnership was identified by staff a RBCS who have children in the primary sector. We have operated this with one school for two years. The partnership has expanded to other local schools.
Resources
The success of this work comes from our specialist Geology department providing resources and equipment as well as developing lessons plans. Regardless of where the teaching takes place, there is no financial contribution.
Impact
80 primary school pupils will benefit from the resource in 2024/25. The anticipated outcome includes specialist teaching in primary schools and the opportunity for our pupils to assist with teaching.
Pupil Involvement
Year 12 Geology pupils run some of the experiments when lessons take place at RBCS.
Frequency
The lessons take place once every year.
