Clay Modelling Inset Session
A group of teachers from Connaught Junior School came to St George's to attend a workshop run by our clay expert to learn some techniques and develop ideas for projects to use at their school.
Aims
The aim of the inset session was to provide training to teachers from all year groups within the primary school on how to work with clay and some project ideas. The St George's clay-making expert was happy to run the session.
Background
The need was identified during a meeting with the Deputy Head of Connaught Junior School and St George's Partnerships and Outreach Coordinator. The Deputy said that the school had targets to work on within the arts from their Ofsted inspection, and while they had the facilities (kiln etc) for clay making, none of the teachers had art experience. Teaching staff attended from all year groups to learn about clay making and cascade to to the teachers and the pupils.
Resources
The session lasted for one hour and was run by St George's clay specialist teacher. Staff from Connaught attended the session at St George's using clay and equipment ready prepared.
Impact
Feedback from staff who attended was extremely positive and they felt the ideas they had learned were effective and were already in use across the school.
Pupil Involvement
This activity did not directly involve pupils, but will have an impact on all pupils at Connaught Junior School.
Frequency
This is a one-off event, but St George's has offered to run other arts-based and more general events in future. Connaught Junior School has a high number of pupil-premium children and limited funding and has identified a number of areas St George's could offer support.
