Classics Drama Workshop

A group of 30 Year-8 state school pupils were invited to participate in a Classics Drama workshop on the Odyssey.

Aims

The partnership aimed to involve local secondary-school children in a Drama Workshop run by an external agency and subsidised by St George's. The aim was to share resources with the state partner school and also to promote inter-school mixing and socialising, particularly for St George's pupils who are all girls and are in a small year group therefore very familiar with each other.

Background

The Head of Classics proposed the event as a way of her department promoting Partnership initiatives between St George's School and local partner schools. St George's Head of Partnership and Outreach contacted Charter's School Drama Lead, who was very enthusiastic about the event.

Resources

A Drama company Splendid Productions was available to come to St George's for the event. St George's has a large theatre for use and the Drama technician was also at hand for the event. St George's School funded the event which lasted for 2 hours.

Impact

All pupils will be given a questionnaire to measure the impact. Teachers from Charter's School said the children were very happy to use the theatre at St George's and discussions about future uses/loans were also discussed. Immediate feedback from visiting pupils was extremely positive, saying they 'loved' the event. Workshops for Year 10 were also discussed and St George's Partnership and Outreach Lead will follow this up.

Pupil Involvement

The event was offered to 30 pupils from each school. Charters School offered places to pupils on Pupil Premium and pupils who are gifted and talented at Drama. All pupils were Year 8.

Frequency

Based on the success of the event and the enthusiasm of the pupils, both schools would like to continue to collaborate on Drama projects in the future.
