Impact Statement

• The School has links with the London Academy of Excellence Tottenham. The collaboration between the schools has allowed for the sharing of good practice and has offered opportunities for experiences beyond the classroom.

• John Lyon works with the London Chamber Orchestra and Harrow Music School in the Music Junction project that offers music tuition, workshops and stages a concert for local children from disadvantaged backgrounds. These children would not otherwise have had the opportunity to play a musical instrument. In doing so they raise their self-confidence and their self-esteem.

• Our Head of Drama, is working in partnership with the Head of Drama at Nower Hill to share expertise. John Lyon pupils have also visited Nower Hill to work in conjunction with their students. This has developed closer collaborative links between the schools.

• The School runs a series of Science workshops in partnership with Gladstone Park School, Neasden. John Lyon provides the staff, facilities and transport to facilitate these. The children find these stimulating and foster their burgeoning interest in the sciences.

• Oxbridge style interviews in partnership with local maintained schools, STEP Maths lessons for students from a local college and the participation of John Lyon staff with the Lumina programme have contributed to increased ambition with regard to higher education and the award of places at sought after universities.

• The University Fair and Careers Fair held at John Lyon invites pupils from maintained schools. Schools to English Study Days, Authors Visits and the Junior Music Day. John Lyon also partners with maintained schools in Debating Competitions and Model United Nations all of which encourage aspiration to new experiences, higher levels of education and increased self-confidence.

• Sudbury Fields and the MUGA are used on a regular basis by Harrow Hockey Club and St Georges Primary School. Middlesex Hockey Club, Harrow Borough Cricket Squads, and local schools also use these facilities enabling them to participate in regular sporting activity and play competitive fixtures.

• Co-curricular projects. As part of the Friday afternoon programme the School is providing workshops for local primary schools in; Art, Drama, Maths, Physics and Coding. These are delivered by pupils with support from the staff. These enable primary school children to engage in these subjects at a deeper level than is possible in the classroom.

• Among the Community Service placements Sixth Form students volunteer weekly at; local primary schools, the Sunshine School for the Blind, They have provided more than 1300 hours of tuition including introducing children to subjects such as Classics that are not in their school curriculum. The advantages of this extend to increased literacy skills.
