Specialist Mathematics and English teaching in local state primary schools
Two senior school teachers visit up to 4 local schools to deliver support, stretch and challenge activities to Year 5 & 6 pupils. They support the primary school curriculum, provide suitable and relevant resources, and deliver specialist teaching to small groups of able pupils.
Aims
The outreach teaching programme aims to support the current provision of the KS2 curriculum and state school teachers by providing extension and support resources for small groups of pupils.
The teaching partnership also helps to strengthen links between KES and its key state feeder schools
Background
The teaching partnership arose from existing links between the schools eg sports skills days, assemblies and day visits, and through discussions between Headteachers to provide more frequent and consistent academic support.
This programme of support has been running for approx 6-7yrs.
Resources
The teaching programme requires planned allocation of the KES English and Maths teachers’ timetable for this work – allowing time for travel and delivery.
The programmes also relies on having a room or space within the partner school to teach and support a small group of children
A vital part of the ongoing success of this programme is the regular feedback on progress and achievement and the positive relationship between KES teachers and primary school teachers.
Impact
Feedback is given to primary school teachers and is both qualitative and quantitative, including written work.
Some of the pupils who are given stretch and challenge activities perform well in KS2 SATS, a few also apply to KES for secondary education.
The sessions build confidence, curiosity and a desire to achieve and reach potential.
Below are some pupil quotes relating to the lessons:
"She gives us challenging problems and always explains and helps us. She gives us tips and tricks to help us with any problems."
"In our session we learn alot about writing and how to improve our writing skills. It is really fun but also we are learning good tips for writing."
"I really enjoy the way she challenges us and she's really kind."
"It helps me to expand my knowledge on English and discover new techniques."
Frequency
The teaching programme is term time and each of our four partner schools has one Maths sessions per fortnight.
Our English teacher visits two schools and provides one hour of teaching per school per fortnight.
