Music Week at King Edward's Junior School

During its inaugural Music Week, King Edward's Junior School invited children from local primary schools to take part in different music sessions hosted by the school so that attendees were exposed to different genres of music or might be encouraged to take up a new music instrument.

Sessions included a Samba workshop, a Folk Music workshop and the Director of Junior School Music visiting a local primary school to run an Indonesian Gamelan workshop.

Aims

The aim was to provide a broad range of musical experiences to primary school children, alongside existing KES pupils, to inspire an interest in music or interest in a particular musical instrument.

The school's director of music worked alongside external musicians to host musical experiences across the duration of a week.

Background

Music Week was organised by the Director of Music at King Edward's junior school, alongside assistance from colleagues at the junior school, pupils at the senior school and external musicians.

Resources

The junior school acted as the location for much of Music Week, with the main hall and music room serving as the two main centres for activity.

In some sessions the school's music equipment was used, and in other sessions visiting musicians brought their own equipment.

The School's Director of Music was involved in the majority of sessions, sometimes working alongside external musicians such as Jamma de Samba, a local samba band. King Edward's School covered the cost of inviting local musicians to school to host workshops.
