Creative workshop with community special school
The Art and Photography department at King Edward's School continued its creative partnership with Three Ways School in Bath by hosting a photographic workshop for Three Ways students during the spring term.
Three Ways School is a Single Academy Trust, operating as a generic community special school.
The workshop was led by KES Art and Photography staff, aided by the school’s sixth form pupils studying photography. Three Ways sixth form students, aged between 16-19yrs, took part in the workshop.
Aims
To provide an opportunity for the Three Ways School students involved to develop their photographic and creatives skills to support their personal development and for KES to build upon its partnership with special schools in the area.
Background
The partnership between the two schools was established in 2021 via the KES art and photography department and a teacher at Three Ways School.
Resources
KES provided three staff members from the Art and Photography department and four sixth form students to help run the workshops. The workshop took place in the Photography department at KES and made use of the department’s photographic studio, dark room, and media suite.
Impact
Commenting on the workshop, The Head Teacher at Three Ways School, said: “The photography workshop enabled our students to extend their basic photographic skills and knowledge. The structured activities led by the Photography department and supported by KES sixth formers introduced the art of creating cyanotypes and photograms.
“The studio and darkroom setup unleashed a wealth of creativity and our students really enjoyed the experience of working in a new and professional environment alongside KES pupils.”
In discussions afterwards about the process and finished pieces, Three Ways students had many positive comments, including:
“It was a lovely opportunity. It was good to use tech that we don't have at our school.”
“It was really cool!”
The Head of Art and Photography at King Edward’s School, said: “Our Year 12 photography students were keen to get involved in the workshop and worked wonderfully with our visitors. During the morning we explored a range of skills and processes, from photograms and cyanotypes to studio photography and photoshop editing. There was some great work produced and it was wonderful to be able to share our facilities with a local school and to watch our students teach new techniques and share their passion for the subject. We look forward to running similar workshops in the future.”
Pupil Involvement
Four Year 12 KES students helped to run the workshop. A group of seven Three Ways students took part in the workshop, supported by staff from their school.
Frequency
Since the creative partnership was established in 2021, one to two workshops take place each year on average.
