Modern Foreign Languages outreach projects

Modern Foreign Languages outreach projects involve pupils from local schools to promote MFL learning such as:

1) Bristol Schools MFL Debates (German, French, Spanish and Russian).

2) Language taster days with Christchurch Primary and Pinewood.

3) MFL taster days.

4) MFL lectures.

5) MFL governor.

Aims

1) To promote debating in Modern Languages in local SW schools.

2) The aim was to offer the students at a state primary a fun and active introduction to MFL.

3) Offer the students a fun and active introduction to MFL; develop an awareness of range of Modern Foreign Languages and provide some European cultural experiences. 

4) To promote and encourage students in the SW to take an interest in languages and studying languages beyond GCSE.

5) To work in close partnership with a local school and work as an ambassador for MFL.

Background

1) Clifton have hosted debates in ML for over 10 years. Invitations are sent out to local schools.

2) In 2016 and 2017 Clifton MFL department collapsed lessons and welcomed 50 primary school students into the dept.The aim was to offer the students a fun and active introduction to MFL including Viennese Waltzing in German, singing in Spanish, treasure hunt in French, building the Great wall in Mandarin.

3) From 2016, Clifton MFL department has collapsed lessons and welcomed 50 primary school students into the dept. on an annual basis.

4) Breaking down the barriers between secondary and tertiary education. Breaking down the barriers between state and private education. All in the interest of supporting languages.

5) From 2016, one member of staff from the MFL department has worked as a governor at Bristol State Academy.

Resources

1) Clifton circulate motions and a pack on debating language.

2) MFL Staff all involved.

3) MFL staff who ran and organised sessions.

4) Lecture in the MFL department by university lecturers.

5) 1 staff member's time and cover implications.

Pupil Involvement

1) Pupils from the following schools are invited: Bristol Cathedral School, Cotham, Katherine Lady Berkeley's, St Mary Redcliffe and Temple School and Backwell School.

2) 50 primary aged students.

3) 50 pupils per year from Christchurch and Pinewood Schools.

4) Invited state school pupils.

5) Bristol State Academy.

Frequency

1) Annually for a day.

2) Annually for a day for past 4 years.

3) Annually - 2016 and 2017 with Christchurch Primary; 2017 at Pinewood School; 2018 at Clifton with Pinewood School where Clifton hosted a STEAM Intergallactic Day.

4) Once a year.

5) Termly meetings, ongoing.
