Barnardo’s Young Carers Mentoring Scheme

The Barnardo’s mentoring scheme was set up six years ago to help young carers in the Bradford area with schoolwork and homework. The young carers arrive every Thursday after school and are helped by a group of willing and able year 13 students.  It is wonderful to see the change in these young people from when they arrive to when they leave – not only do they improve academically but also grow in confidence, with a belief that they too can succeed. The year 13 students have the opportunity to “give something back” and realise how many opportunities they have in life and are very humbled by it. In 2017, the scheme has been nominated for the Queens Award for Voluntary Service. There is no other mentoring scheme for young carers in the UK like it – it is unique!
