Year 4 Army Problem Solving and Team Building

We wanted to develop our Year 4 pupils’ ability to think under pressure, strengthen their collaboration skills, and encourage creative, "outside the box" thinking. To extend these skills further, we gave them the opportunity to work alongside pupils from other schools.

Aims

We identified a desire to develop our pupils leadership and thinking skills.

Background

In conversations with the senior staff at Heathlands Primary school, a state primary we already work very closely with, it became clear that we both schools wished to further the thinking skills and leadership opportunities for our younger pupils.  Year 4 was identified as a key year group and one which could work together on a joint project.

Resources

As the "lead" school, Littlegarth agreed to both host and organise an army problem solving and leadership day.  We made contact with an army group that would deliver the day and organised transport to collect Heathlands, the other participating school.

Impact

It is anticipated that pupils will develop their ability to work in groups to overcome "problems", to think logically and find solutions, and gain confidence and self belief when taking on leadership roles. It is hoped the experience will have a positive impact both in and out of the classroom.

Pupil Involvement

Year 4 pupils (boys and girls) from both state and independent schools.

Frequency

The project is an annual event which will take place in the spring term.
