Royal Society of Chemistry Science Event

An annual event, held over two evenings when the School welcomes approx. 150 local cubs and brownies, and their leaders, to the School to undertake a number of science experiments and demonstrations.

Aims

To inspire those attending, and to develop a love of science.

Background

This is an annual event, held over two evenings, when the School welcomes approx. 150 local cubs and brownies, and their leaders, to the School to undertake a number of science experiments and demonstrations.

We also work with local Cubs and Scouts' troops to enable completion of some badges at other times in the year, providing resources such as: the use of IT facilities, sports hall and support staff back-up for a day (weekend).

Resources

The event takes place on consecutive evenings in Bushell Hall, supported by the School's Science staff, both teachers and technicians, and runs for approx. 2 hours on both nights (not including set-up and clear up which is extensive!). The children are divided into groups and enjoy undertaking a carousel of science activities and experiments, each led by students at Birkenhead School who are 'science leaders'. There is then an interactive science demonstration led by School staff to conclude the evening.

Impact

School staff receive feedback from the cubs and brownie leaders.

Pupil Involvement

Approx. 30 Birkenhead School Science Leaders help lead the carousel of activities.

The cubs and brownies are approx. 8 - 11 years of age.

Frequency

An annual event, held this year on the 15th and 16th November.
