Primary Schools Sports Festivals

Hosting and staffing a number of sports festival days for over ten local primary schools in North Devon.  Introducing skills and drills through the use of specialist coaches and allowing the pupils access to top quality facilities, in order to enhance their love of sport and activity.

Aims

The aim was to introduce new skills and build on those already attained. To promote the benefits of activity and sport and, in particular, how to work as a team.

Many of North Devon's primary schools are very small and do not have the capacity to provide the excellent facilities and qualified staff that West Buckland has to offer. Throughout the country the lack of sport and facilities has been identified as a area of concern and West Buckland is therefore working hard to fill this gap and allow as many children as possible, in North Devon, access to quality staff and facilities.

The pupils benefit from learning new sporting skills, receiving excellent tuition and the chance to try new skills. For the primary school staff, it is an opportunity to learn new coaching techniques.

Background

A very long-standing relationship with a number of the primary schools in the region and a mutual recognition of the need for more sport and activity.

The outstanding sporting facilities that the school is able to offer, incuding astroturf pictch, swimming pool, indoor sports hall and extensive grounds.

The activity uses approximately 6 qualified PE teaching staff for a whole day at a time.

Impact

Although it is difficult to quantify the benefits, it is undoubtedly an exciting day for hte children and a great opportunity for the staff to share skills.
