Hosting Special Olympics

Providing a venue for a Special Olympics event for children and adults with intellectual and physical disabilities.

Aims

To offer our facilities, including 25m indoor pool for use for Special Olympics events.

Background

The relationship was developed through a parent at West Buckland being involved in Special Olympics.  We wanted to support the movement by providing a venue.

Resources

The facilities used included the pool, changing facilities and sports hall.  Non-teaching staff were involved in the logistics of hosting the events.

These events are held on an ad hoc basis.

There is no extra financial contribution, other than any additional running costs.

Impact

The Special Olympics encourages inclusion and participation from thousands of people of all ages who have a wide range of physical and intellictual needs.

Through sport they gain in confidence, feel part of a team and enjoy the exhileration of participating and competing, which allows them to go on and push themselves and try new things.
