Primary School Hockey Tournament
St Edward’s School welcomed over 140 primary school pupils from five different schools to an afternoon of hockey in partnership with Oxford Hawks as part of their Project 2000. This was the third tournament of its kind. Schools competed against one another in a series of matches.
BBC Oxford were also in attendance and chatted all things hockey and partnerships.
Aims
Hockey is not a sport that many primary schools get to play. We wanted to give as many local schools as possible an opportunity to learn the basics of this wonderful sport and play fun and non competitive hockey games against other primary schools.
Background
We have partnered with the Oxford Hawks Hockey Club on their Project 2000. Their aim is to deliver 2000 hours per year of hockey into schools that do not have provision already and make hockey coaching available to young players across Oxfordshire.
Resources
A coaching workshop before the sessions was delivered to one of the attending schools by Oxford Hawk’s and St Edward’s hockey professional.
Use of pitches
Refreshments provided for all visitors
Impact
The pupils hockey improves more and more with every tournament.
The main aim is for pupils to have fun and enjoy sport and running about. Pupils have joined Oxford Hawks Hockey Club as a result of the coaching they provide and the tournaments we run together.
BBC Radio Oxford came to watch the event and interviewed The Warden, The Schools Partnerships Manager and The Director of Juniors from Oxford Hawks.
Pupil Involvement
10 St Edward’s ‘Sports Leaders’
140 pupils from 5 local state primary schools.
