Aims

A project to stretch and challenge pupils from St Andrews Primary School in maths and logical reasoning. Pupils come to Brighton College on a weekly basis throughout the academic year and are taught by L6th pupils, supported by a member of the Maths department.

Background

This project is new this year and builds on the successful model of our Minimus Latin lessons. It has two aims; firstly to give pupils in primary state schools the opportunity to gain confidence in maths and learn about aspects of maths not found on national curriculum, and secondly to challenge our sixth form pupils to plans, resource and deliver high quality lessons and stretch their own knowledge of Maths.

Resources

1 member of staff, 11 6th form pupils.

Impact

Pupils complete feedback forms where we assess the pupils’ enjoyment of Maths Club and the impact of the club on their confidence in maths. Each year we have seen the vast majority of pupils rate their enjoyment as “very high”. We have a number of parental emails who also attest to their child’s continued enthusiasm for maths and enjoyment of the lessons. A tracking system set up in 2019 is aiming to measure whether attendance at Maths Club has an impact on pupil performance/improvement in their Year 5 and 6 school assessments.

Pupil Involvement

13 Y5 pupils from St Andrews Primary School attend regularly, and lessons are planned and delivered by a team of 11 sixth form pupils, supported by one member of the Maths department. This club will be open to all schools in Brighton from next year.

Frequency

Weekly during term time for one hour.
