Foodbanks

Seldon House pupils, alongside our College Chaplain, have installed a regular foodbank inside the college Chapel. They coordinate deliveries from Chapel to the three major foodbanks in Brighton.

Aims

Seldon House pupils, alongside our College Chaplain, have installed a regular foodbank inside the college Chapel. They coordinate deliveries from Chapel to the three major foodbanks in Brighton.

Background

Seldon House visited five foodbanks in Brighton as part of their MADD day for the past two years. In doing so, they were educated about the food bank users, the need for food banks and the reasons for their increase in recent years. Following this, Brighton College introduced a “12 days of Christmas” House challenge in which houses competed to bring in donations, with houses being awarded points for each complete “set” of items. Following the success of this, the pupils in Seldon advocated for a permanent food bank donation within the college, and nominated three of the most in need food banks who they would like to work with.

Resources

A venue for the foodbank, 10 pupil volunteers to deliver goods each half term.

Impact

The initial “12 days of Christmas” challenges increased donations to Brighton Food banks at this important time of year five-fold. Through our permanent food bank donation basket we have seen donations increase throughout the year since its introduction, and local foodbanks tell us that they are able to make more donation packages due to this steady stream of donations from Brighton College. It has also meant that we are able to communicate particular needs to our pupil, staff and parent body through our school newsletter in times of shortage for the food banks and therefore improve the food banks communication with donors.

Pupil Involvement

All pupils, staff and parents.

Frequency

Ongoing.
