Book Awards

The event began with students dividing into discussion groups to explore the three books and share their opinions on each. This was followed by a full schedule of engaging activities, including a quiz, a talk by author Sue Wallman, a guess-the-book-cover challenge, a design-a-bookmark competition, and, finally, a vote to select their favourite book from the shortlist.

Aims

The aims of the initiative were to encourage reading for pleasure, make the students active participants in the selection of the winner, support authors and enjoy being with other readers. Success depended on a well-run day of awards with the students actively engaged. Seven schools in St Albans took part with around 50 students present on the day with promotion in each school library around that.

Resources

We held preliminary meetings for the librarians at STAHS. The awards day itself was held at Marlborough School, involving librarian Jo Foster and Olivia Dixon to support.

Pupil Involvement

Six Y8 students applied and were accepted for the day along with similar age students from the other local independent and state schools.
