Impact Statement
The school has a flourishing STEAM initiative led by subject specific staff, parent volunteers and 16 local state schools.
The school has hosted events such as Career Fairs, 6th form conferences, advice centres, as well as organising visits to local industries and work experience. It has impacted on over 200 children and has been especially beneficial to female students with special events looking at the role and opportunities for women in industry.
Our literacy outreach work is underpinned by a programme put together by our Librarian and English Department. Leighton Park offers a series of book events involving state schools in addition to creative writing workshops and 6th form mentoring.
Weekly during term time we host local primary schools for swimming lessons and provide a life-guard and a coach free of charge. This involves 40 pupils per week and impacts on their physical health and lifeskills. Our sports leaders in Yr 10 also support the sessions and menotr the KS2 students involved.
Teachers and senior students regularly attend local state primary schools to support with sports sessions and reading sessions. This impacts on up to 50 external students per academic year and has both beneficial physical health and educational outcomes.
We have hosted public speaking competitions, organised by a local Rotary Club, which was attended by students from local state and independent schools.
We work closely with Reading Family Aid, a local charity to support low-income families. We donated £3000 worth of gifts as well as working with the organisation on the distribution of the gifts.
Our Music Department invite a local state primary school to attend performances and events and have shared recording facilities with them and with a local state secondary school. Our choir frequently perform at local Care Homes, and on wards and memorial services at Royal Berkshire Hospital.
