Virtual School Hertfordshire - Looked After Children

During the Easter and Summer holidays, Berkhamsted plays host to more than 50 students from years 10, 11 and 12, plus 15 Virtual High School staff and mentors, free of charge. These students participate in academic sessions, including Maths, English and Science, provided by Berkhamsted teachers on a voluntary basis.

Aims

The chief aim is to realise the students' potential and raise aspirations for the future via these "Aim Higher" residential trips.

Further personal development is attained as students explore who they are, how they manage themselves and, how they co-operate with others as part of the Outdoor Education and Leadership Development activities.

50 senior school students from the Virtual School Hertfordshire community, attend in each of the Easter and Summer holidays.

Resources

The visiting students have full access to the School's sporting facilities and boarding houses, and all catering is provided by the Berkhamsted catering team, Chartwells, pro bono. Outdoor Education and Leadership Development sessions are held at the School's High Ropes Activity Centre.

Impact

Students generally raise their attainment and aspirations as a result of their experience at Berkhamsted School's sites. The personal development skills learned as part of the Outdoor Education and Leadership Development activities develop skills that are directly transferable to the work place, universities, and daily life.

Frequency

Every Easter and Summer holiday.
