Linked Overseas Schools
In 2004, the link between Berkhamsted School and Sandi Senior Secondary School was created. We are also linked with Ntsundwane Junior Secondary School.
Both Schools are co-educational, rural Schools in the Ngqeleni District of the Eastern Cape, formerly the Transkei. The nearest town is Mthatha. Sandi SSS was established in 1995 and has about 870 pupils (‘learners’), studying grades 10-12. Their ages vary due to some coming later to education and the necessity to pass a grade before moving to the next. The native language of the pupils is Xhosa and all pupils learn English. Ntsundwane JSS was established in 1929 and has pupils from Reception to Grade 9.
Aims
To develop a friendship, broaden our horizons and to learn from each other.
Background
The friendship between the Schools has grown from strength to strength. There are three aspects to the friendship: communication by letters, cards, and email; visits to and from England and South Africa; special projects such as the Sandi Bursary.
Thanks to support from the Berkhamsted School community, we have successfully raised funds for five Sandi pupils thus far to attend Walter Sisulu University in Mthatata and undertake studies to become teachers.
Frequency
We plan to continue this sustainable initiative and are always looking for other ways of supporting the two Schools.
